Sport, Peace and Development:

How Can Sport Contribute to Positive Social Change?

Just hours before the Olympic Flame is lit in Vancouver, Right To Play, the University of British Columbia and Merck, with the support of the Vancouver 2010 Education Program, are pleased to host a dynamic mix of influential advocates and champions who will come together in dialogue to explore the ways in which sport can be harnessed to promote peace and development.

Globally, sport and play are increasingly garnering recognition as agents of social change with the power to contribute to national and international development goals and objectives –including the promotion of health, the achievement of education, the empowerment and inclusion of marginalized groups and the pursuit of peace.

Speakers:

·         Johann Olav Koss: President & CEO of Right To Play/Four-time Olympic Gold Medalist

·         Stephen Lewis: Chair of the Board of the Stephen Lewis Foundation

·         Wilfried Lemke: Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace

·         Benjamin Nzobonankira: Sport for Development practitioner and former child refugee
