Meet Our Athletes

Meet our Canadian Athlete Ambassadors competing in London:

For the 2012 London Olympic Games, Clara Hughes will compete on the Canadian road cycling team (one of four riders); this will be Clara’s sixth Olympics, and if she medals in London she will be Canada’s most decorated Olympian of all-time with six medals from both the Summer and Winter Games. Clara has been one of Right To Play’s most dedicated supporters since she became an Athlete Ambassador in 2006; many Canadians recall her famous personal donation of $10,000 to Right To Play following her gold medal win. Clara has since traveled with the organization to Mali, Ethiopia, the Middle East, Ghana and Rwanda to increase awareness about Right To Play’s sport and play-based programs.

Attending his third Olympic Games, kayaker Adam van Koeverden will be competing in the 1000m distance in London; he won gold and bronze at the 2004 Olympic Games, and a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Adam is an ardent supporter of Right To Play after joining the organization five years ago, and has traveled with the organization to Liberia and Mali in West Africa.

Simon Whitfield, our Canadian triathlon champion and Right To Play Athlete Ambassador, has not only qualified for the 2012 Summer Games but will be Canada’s official flag bearer for the Opening Ceremonies. When Simon won the gold medal at the Sydney Games his time was 1:48:24.02- this time still stands as the fastest Olympic triathlon.

Nicknamed “Captain Canada”, Ian Millar and Star Power of Perth (his chosen horse) will be representing Canada at the London Olympics in Equestrian Jumping. By competing in London (a staggering 10th appearance at an Olympic Games) will set an Olympic record for number of appearances by any athlete. We are proud to have Ian represent Right To Play as an Athlete Ambassador.

Jose Calderon (Point guard for the Toronto Raptors) will be in London competing for the Spanish National Basketball Team. Spain is currently ranked #2 in the world (behind the USA; FIBA rankings). Jose has been a terrific supporter of Right To Play, and helps to raise funds for the organization with a limited edition t-shirt campaign held during the NBA season.

He is the 2007 RS-X North American Champion. Zac dedicates his free time to promoting Right To Play as an Athlete Ambassador both at home and abroad, and volunteers at community events throughout Canada.

The Canadian Women’s Soccer Team (currently ranked seventh in the world), will be one of the 12 soccer teams competing in London. Team members Kaylyn Kyle, Melissa Tancredi, Erin McLeod and Carmelina Moscato travelled to participate in Right To Play programs in Liberia (West Africa) earlier this year. The Canadian Women’s Soccer Team has supported Right To Play since 2009, when they began the season with a successful ‘Make Your Goals Count’ campaign raising both funds and awareness for the organization.
