Right To Play and Harlequins Rugby Club

Right To Play has been the official charity partner of Harlequins since the start of the 2010/11 season in September. The club is based in London but their brand and famous quartered jersey is recognised around the world. The second season of this two year partnership was particularly special; Quins sported the Right To Play logo on a special kit in front of 82,000 fans at Twickenham in December 2011. Their next visit to the home of English rugby saw them crowned league winners for the first time in their history in an epic final where they beat the much fancied Leicester Tigers 30-23. Congratulations to everyone at Harlequins from Right To Play – what a season!

The partnership, the first of its kind for Quins, has seen Right To Play truly integrate into the club with players, staff, sponsors and the fans all getting behind the charity. Right To Play ran a Right To Play games session for all the Quins players, allowing them to understand and appreciate first-hand how Right To Play uses sport and play to change the lives of young people around the world.  The players were also on hand to support former Quins’ star, Andy Gomarsall’s training for Right To Play’s annual bike ride in 2011 which departed from the Stoop and arrived at the Tour de France four days and 350 miles later.

The highlight of the partnership so far saw Right To Play as the beneficiary of the biggest game in Premiership Ruby – Big Game 4.  A record breaking 82,000 people packed out Twickenham to see Harlequins face local rivals Saracens.  Although Quins lost the game, Right To Play’s logo on their special shirt and the profits from the shirt sales raising nearly £15,000 meant that the young people who benefit from Right To Play programmes around the world were the real winners.

“This partnership has seen Right To Play and Quins work together in numerous ways and has been the most progressive partnership of its kind in Premiership Rugby.  It has been fantastic that the success in raising money and awareness for Right To Play by Harlequins has also been matched by their excellent performances and achievements on the pitch through the partnership.”  Leo Matlock, Partnerships Manager, Right To Play.
