Matt was born in Liverpool, England in June of 1985. He was a strong cyclist from the off, as he competed in the Track World Championships in 2003 and the Commonwealth Games in 2006. As one of a select group of riders trying his hand both on the road and the track Matt was destined for great things.
Matt was involved in an accident in November 2007, when he was stuck by a cement mixing lorry whilst training. He broke both his legs, but with grit and determination he returned to cycling and now he’s one of the promising young up-and-coming riders on the international cycling scene.
He declared Irish nationality in advance of the 2009/10 track season and made a successful debut when finishing 4th in the scratch race at the Manchester World Cup meeting in October 2009. He became Irish National Road Race Champion in June 2010 and in 2011, he defended his Irish Elite Road Race title & also won the National Elite Time Trial title. Matt is a member of the OmegaPharm-Quickstep cycling team and is definitely one to watch for the future. |
Matt became involved with Right To Play through HTC-Highroad and has continued his involvement ever since. While busy in competition mode Matt always makes time to do what he can for Right To Play and is also a budding star on this front.
